Correspondence on 13/02/2012 KAI-TING CHANG, taiwanaise, 24 ans.
12th June 2010, it was the date that I will never forget. As a junior journalist, I was sent off to a small town in middle France, Angers. As a foreign journalist, I was not impressed until I was actually experiencing the lifestyles and slow paces here, with the abundant culture heritages and strong sense of amicability. This is my first impression of this city: lovable and tranquil. But the first impression faded when I started over my life here. In fact, before coming to France, I was all informed that I will be stuck in life availability here: language barrier, unavailability in transportation, administration…etc. Even though I have prepared to a certain level in mind, I still can’t help but confront something which are not very pleasant to me.
1ST ROUND: “PAS D'ANGLAIS” When I was in the train station, I tried to explain my problem in French and ask for guidance. I was not treated friendly by the acceuil but instead “pas d’anglais” as his reply. That reminds me in Taiwan, it will be a totally different situation when we confront a foreigner who seems anxiously lost. Anyway, this was not a very pleasant experience. Since language itself can reflect a cultural and represent its ethnicity, I can’t help but start wondering, what are the earth French people thinking? What will be their mindset? Anyway, if it will be the sense of ethnical superiority speaking, then as foreigners who can’t speak the same language, we should probably just try to respect and understand it. But in fact it occurs me that why people outside of France will automatically assume that people should speak English expect French people? That would be another huge topic of conversation.
2ND ROUND: ADMINISTRATION. I can’t say that in Taiwan the administration is faster and better than here, because we always complain and mock administrative are lazy people who work very slowly and no passion. Until I came here, I start feeling that it is much better in Taiwan! We can run at least 5 errands in one day and make lots of things done; but here, I should clean out a whole vacant day to go only to the post in centre ville, to fill forms, to watch clients pleasantly talking with workers without knowing people waiting in line… In fact, it was a part of French culture as one of the most elegant ethnic with the most elegant life pace, which I think it means: slow. It implements in several aspects: eating, talking, always late for rendez-vous…etc. But to make myself clear, all these are just generally speaking, it still depends on different people in different situations.
3rd ROUND: CULTURAL DIFFERENCES. Of course there is no doubt to say cultural shocks exist when two differences confront and bump each other; for example, when formage met stinky tofu (traditional Taiwanese snack, famous for its stinky smell), when wines met Taiwan beers, when luxury brands met street vendors, when French cuisine table manner met hot-pot culture (sharing food in a big round table, with chopsticks altogether in the pot)… Not to mention that we have at least 5 countries of cultures mixing together in this class, it will be my next step of learning: how to blend in and deal with cultural differences in a cross-cultural group? And furthermore how to grow up in cooperation with this group, and how “myself” can grow up in this country, and I can face and cope with all the differences and challenges within the cultural differences, and that’s what I anticipate myself to learn from this class.
In this piece of article, it seems that I pointed out many defaults and whatsoever, but actually what I am trying to point out is the difference. I would like to welcome and recommend people to come to Angers since it is really a nice place to slow down the life paces, to wash out the hustle bustle in our lives. Now, I can concentrate on my studies and squeeze out my time to learn cooking, wine-tasting, and to enjoy French lifestyles in Angers. And finally I realize that why we always applaud that French people know how to enjoy lives, that’s because it’s their way and mindset to appreciate every moment in a respectful way of living, which is what we sometimes ignore and less pay attention to.

It was all starting from the sojourn toward Venice. The hailing burst out the curtain of the scene, “First class to Venice! Here you are, sir!” where seemed to be “A happily chosen destination!” The truth is, however, the detached mentality was carried Aschenbach from the “Venice! A magnificent city!” Venice’s magnificence seemed not parallel to a mournful mind, the inner solemnity was unspeakable, toward the outer world. Indeed, “A city full of irresistible attraction to the well-educated, both due to its history and its present charms!” A city with history, charismatic as it shined, brought out anticipation, fever, and hopes. While the case was not as anticipated enough, that is, the city of splendor did not well received, functioned, and perceived by an unawakened mind. In the first place, “He did not anticipate anything else, for the city had always received him with splendor.” (p.13)
In the making of a transitory mind, the settlement in the first explored place was worth observing. “What seemed to him so hard to bear, even intolerable, was apparently the notion that he would never again set eyes on Venice, that this would be a permanent farewell (p.25). The dislike of Venice was reaching the point of being intolerable. However, there was no doubt Tadzio’s showing up was a tipping point. The observing essence of a distant gaze soon took over the emptiness of a rekindled mind. Then the depictions were tempting, “Several times, when the Sun set behind Venice, he sat on a bench in the park to watch Tadzio who, dressed in white and girded gaily, was playing ball on the flattened gravel court and it was Hyacinth he deemed to see who had to die because two gods fell in love with him,” (p.36) pervading the aroma of lust. It was not until the affection to Tadzio was brewing in the city of lust, the transferring affection to the city was coming up:
“That was Venice, alluring and dubiously entrancing—this city, part fairy tale, part tourist trap, in the putrid atmosphere of which art used to blossom luxuriously and which had inspired musicians with lulling melodies. The adventurer felt as if his eyes were drinking that kind of luxury, as if his ears were courted by those kinds of melodies; he also recalled that the city was ailing and kept it secret because of its lucre, and he gazed even more unrestrainedly at the gondola in front.”(p.40)
However, the turning of the sets was vibrantly shifted later on, with the scorching sun and the overbearing sultriness haunted in the city. It was broodingly haunted, Venice, St Mark’s, flooded with crowds, “Venice is diseased!” (p.47) the scandalous malady was out of control, and the police was over the town sterilizing. The diseased Venice set a tone of sadness, contrasted the alluring sentiments of the loving hearts. The city did play a turning role backing up the transforming characters’ makings of mentalities. Solemnly depicted, it sent out messages of bitter sweetness voicing the uncanny beauty with downside darkness. With the twisted magnificence of a promising city, Venice was thus seen a saddened backdrop with reminiscing props, rekindling every single challenging heart.

another noir for tonight

Compared to the iconic 18th of splendor, the conspiracy was made out of nobody in The Third Man. For the backdrop of the Four Allie powers right after the WWII, Vienna was at that time on the peril of being the declining city of occupancy. The turmoil age was brewing a blended gathering as the black market was once showed up in Vienna city. The city was introduced not the imperial side of spectacular but the downside of a falling empire. The conspiracy was about tracing the mythic dead Third Man while the Holly found himself in his own pulp fiction protagonist. There is also such an exciting moment when contrasting the language use in each age. To look into Amadeus, the debates on the opera, Italian or German, were innovatively out spoken by Mozart by saying “It's full of proper German virtues!” when nobody seemed to know what was one of them. Until we saw in The Third Man, the inter-allied zone of Vienna where no common language was spoken, the pidgin German was mixed up with languages of nonsense. “All strangers to the place...and none of them could speak the same language, except a sort of smattering of German.” Then the proper German virtues were once again of no answers.
